Snowshoeing in the North Fork area of Flathead National Forest offers a unique glimpse into a winter landscape that is often overlooked and less traveled.
Starting in Columbia Falls, MT, which is 17 miles from Kalispell, MT, locate North Fork Road off of Railroad Street. Follow North Fork Road about 17 miles. While along the Flathead River, there are many Forest Service roads that are accessible to snowshoe along. There are roads that lead to the Flathead River and roads that lead away from the river. There is an abundance of area to explore along the North Fork Road. With the many roads and area that can be traversed on snowshoes, there is no definite path/road that one must take while in the area. One path that can be taken towards the river is Forest Service road 9898. This road is 17 miles from Columbia Falls. The service road leads down to the river, which is easily accessible. Parking is available along the road. The view at the end of the road is glorious, as it overviews the river and the surrounding mountains. Every path is different in its own way, which makes the North Fork a breathtaking region to explore.
The North Fork Road is a remote destination that will likely lead to the absence of human contact for the entirety of your adventure. While snowshoeing, there are many opportunities to view Huckleberry Mountain (no huckleberries this time of year) and the surrounding snow covered mountains. Be on the lookout for deer, elk and rabbits while snowshoeing.
The North Fork area is often overlooked by those visiting Montana as Glacier National Park is in close proximity to the area. If you are looking for a lesser known adventure, check out the North Fork. Come prepared as the Montana weather can change on a dime.
