This short but strenuous hike is rewarded with a generous view of the surrounding mountains at the summit as well as beautiful views during the ascent and descent.
Starting in Livingston, MT, take Hwy 89 for 16 miles and take a left on Mill Creek Road. A junction with Road 540 will be reached. At this junction, continue on Mill Creek Road for another 8 miles until a large rock gully on the left is present and a wooden fence is on the right. The route is not clearly defined and starts directly at this large rock gully.
From the parking area, a wooded area to the right of the gully is where the route begins. Take this route until 5,900 ft. and angle towards the right. There is a flat spot at 6,150 ft. This flat area indicates the beginning of the ridge that will be used for the ascent. A game trail can be used to continue up the mountain. The trees provide cover from the talus and offer better footing. At 7,200 ft., the ridge broadens and there is a clearing on the ridge between 7,270 ft. and 7,360 ft. After entering the trees again, at 7,900 ft., the treeline is reached. The ridge narrows at 8,600 ft. and the summit is reached at 9,120 ft.
