An iconic, introductory climb in Glacier National Park that every park enthusiast should complete. Epic views from all around.
Mt. Reynolds is a premier peak in Glacier National Park (GNP). The views from the beginning to the summit are incredible all the way around. Reynolds offers those who are starting to climb an introductory climb with little technicality and a reward that is well earned at the top.
GNP requires an entrance fee for each car. After taking the Going-to-the-Sun Highway to Logan Pass, park in the large parking area (if you are lucky enough to find a parking space) and start hiking the Hidden Lake overlook trail. Along this trail, a small pond will appear on the hiker's left. A well established route veers towards Mt. Reynolds. Before reaching the Dragon's Tail (the Dragon's Tail is a well defined ridge on the climber's right), a couloir with a large, red rock appears on the climber's left. Take this large couloir up for about 250-300 ft. until a ridge is reached. From this ridge, the climber's trail is well defined for the rest of the climb. The trail cuts across the north face of Reynolds and proceeds to wrap around the back side of the mountain. From the back side, pick your way up carefully among the small cliffs to the north west ridge of Reynolds and make your way along the ridge a short ways to the summit of Mt. Reynolds. The summit awards views all around GNP.
The return route is different than the ascent. After picking your way down the cliffs, a well defined scree path down the south west side of the mountain should be taken to meet up with the original trail that cuts off right before the Dragon's Tail.
