Description

This stunning cenote is an underground river with 7 different entrances.

A cenote is a a natural sinkhole that appears when bedrock collapses and exposes groundwater beneath. The exposed water can be above ground, or in a series of underground caves and rivers. The Yucatan Peninsula is somewhat known for cenotes, and a trip to the area isn't complete without a swim in one.

7 Bocas means 7 Mouths, and this cenote is unique because there are 7 different entrances to a network of underground caves and rivers. You can enter the water by jumping from a cliff edge, or descending into the cave by stairs. Once in the water, you can swim to the 7 different openings through the connected cavern. If you have snorkel equipment, bring it! You can see different cave formations under the crystal clear water.

To get to the cenote, take the Ruta de las Cenotes just outside of Puerto Morelos. Follow the road until you see signs for 7 Bocas. If you are staying in a resort in Cancún, 7 Bocas is only about a 20 minute drive away.

You can get there a few different ways. You can rent a car and drive the Route yourself, or you can probably take a group taxi called a collectivo. I rented a car, and enjoyed the freedom to stop at multiple cenotes on the way.

When you arrive, there is a small ticket booth. Admission is around $20 per person, and be prepared with cash. There may or may not be signs stating the admission price. Cenotes in the area coast around 350 pesos for reference. Once inside, you can swim in the cenote as long as you like. There are also picnic tables, life vests, bathrooms, and areas to change.

When I was there, this cenote was very quiet with hardly any other people. 7 Bocas was also one of my favorite cenotes, so if you are looking for a quiet, awesome cavern cenote, you can't miss it!
