Visit the Frosty Drew Observatory
Charlestown, Rhode Island
Description
Added by Anthony D'Ercole
Frosty Drew offers a personal space exploration experience.
The Frosty Drew Observatory is located near the tip of southern Rhode Island, which means apart from summer this is a very quiet beach town. The isolation from major urban areas provides the perfect conditions for star-gazing. The building itself is located on a large plot of land dedicated to nature observation and on Friday nights (when the facility is open to the public) is an interesting place to be. The nature park runs programs in the warmer months to experience the lake and/or the beach. Towards the back of the park, is the small sky theater that is pretty hard to miss with its red glow and unique shape. The astronomers on site will adjust the telescope as needed and provide answers to any questions and comment on any phenomena. On the particular night I went the Frosty Drew staff was viewing Saturn and you were able to see a detailed image both within the eye lens and on the monitor. If it is warm enough, the building is surrounded by a grass lawn and picket fence. Additionally, some guests brought their own telescopes to set up on the lawn. The staff is overall very helpful and kind allowing for a very unforgettable look into the universe.
