Visit the National Elk Refuge
Jackson, Wyoming
Description
Added by Tiffany Young
If you're going to Jackson Hole, be sure to spare some time to stop at the National Elk Refuge that's on the way! It's simple... see beautiful wildlife in their natural habitat.
In the 20th century when development continued to grow, the refuge was created to provide the elk with an efficient habitat for survival. So today, when you come to visit the refuge - the time of the year you come will impact what you see at the refuge (it's not always just about the elk!) I visited in mid-March.
The most important thing is to keep your distant! It's for the safety of you and the wildlife.
The best way to experience the habitat (in my opinion) is on the horse-drawn Winter Sleigh Ride. Not only does this provide you with an intimate view of the habitat, but the guides have a ton of knowledge about the refuge, wildlife, and history. Don't be afraid to ask questions because they'll give you a great answer! And each sleigh is also provided with TONS of warm and cozy blankets to keep you warm. This is available from mid-December to April!
Viewing can also be seen from:
- North Highway 26/89
- Refuge Road

See the place where all the arches in Jackson were made from. The Elk Refuge is a great place for wildlife photography. Best time to view them here is late fall into winter.

I was able to visit this refuge while I lived in Jackson Hole. Such an amazing experience - the sound the elk make when they call to each other is other-worldly. Wonderful experience for families - it's something I'll never forget!

Great stop on the way to GTNP. Winter is the best time to visit! Be sure to try some bison chili at Cowboy Coffee in Jackson on your way here.
