Nestled in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia is the unique Cranberry Glades Botanical Area. Similar to the acidic bogs found in the northeast, this is the southernmost area one can find certain plants in North America.
From the parking lot, the boardwalk trail breaks off of the right side of the lot. The boardwalk loop should be done in a clockwise direction and there are signs to direct you.
The 1/2 mile boardwalk offers great views of the surrounding bog and mountains. The boardwalk itself is skirted by ferns, wild cranberry plants, orchids, and even some carnivorous plants.
Although the walk is short, there is plenty to see along the boardwalk. When combined with hiking The Falls of Hills Creek, this makes for an excellent day trip.
**Note that the Cranberry Glades are closed from December - March, so plan your visit accordingly.
