Get great views and photo opportunities while enjoying the solitude camping at this overlook.

If this is your initiation into winter camping, make it a memorable one by overlooking the beautiful Fremont Lake.

There are several spots no more than 200 yards out on the hills that overlook the lake, so take your pick, as I've never seen another soul camping here. The views are spectacular, and you feel like you're out in wilderness, while still being only a 5 minute walk from your car, and a 10 minute drive to town.

Be sure to place your tent in a slight depression in the snow and not on a hill – you wouldn't want to slide off the mountain in the middle of the night!

Another tip – put the boughs of dead trees under your tent to provide a buffer between you and the snow. This will keep you warmer than you might think.

Be sure to be there for the “blue hour” - that time just a bit after the sun has gone down, when the sky glows blue and other lovely colors. This is the best time to get your tent shots! The light in the tent (lamp or flashlight) balances wonderfully with the ambient light of the sky.

Getting there: Just past the turnoff for White Pine Ski Resort on Skyline Drive, you will come to a small car park on your left. Just through the aspens you can see Fremont Lake below. Park here and pack your overnight gear.
