Sony RX100 VI Review

Sony’s assault on the adventure photography segment continues with the latest version of their outstanding, ultra-portable, ultra-versatile, and remarkably *good* X100 VI.

All photos in this article were shot on the Sony RX100 VI.

The RX100 Mark VI is Sony’s all-awards-winning entry in the pocket-sized advanced compact category. By-design it is *for everybody*, and this includes semi-pro and professional photographers, and its extensive features and size/weight make it perfect for almost all outdoor adventure sports, fitting conveniently into hip packs and pocks on shoulder straps.

We had the opportunity to take the RX100 on our recent Summer Lookbook project with Visit Santa Fe County, using it in a variety of conditions from low-light campfire settings to mountain biking in the bright mid-day sun, and it was sharp, fast, and easy to use.

The RX100 VI boasts a 20.2MP 1” CMOS sensor, a 3.6x Carl Zeiss optical zoom with a fast f/1.8 max aperture, and professional and semi-pros will love the RX100’s full manual control (including a focus ring), ability to shoot in Raw, and that it can shoot 10 FPS (at max quality) and 1080p full HD videos.

It has a standard sensitivity range of ISO 80 - 6400 that can be pushed to 25,600, meaning it worked great in our indoor and night scenes. And with a size of 4 × 2 3/8 × 1 7/16 inches and a max weight of 8 ounces, it fit in pock packs, packs, and purses alike. We even tucked it fanny pack and took it up crack in Diablo Canyon.

The RX100 VI is a remarkable little device, and has become my go-to point-and-shoot whenever I don’t feel like taking my larger camera setup, and is now our de-facto b-roll and “behind the scenes” camera. It just works, and works well.
