Why You Need to Visit Taughannock Falls in the Winter

Taughannock Falls is gorgeous year-round, but it is especially beautiful in the winter

By: Abby Shepard + Save to a List

Taughannock Falls is an impressive 215 plunge waterfall in the Finger Lake region of upstate New York. No matter the time of year, visiting the falls is an absolute must. However, the best views may be found in the winter.

While most of the gorge trails in the region are closed in the winter due to icy conditions, you can hike the gorge trail at Taughannock Falls year-round (check the website for current conditions first). There is plenty of ice, but the ice is the best part!

The gorge trail will take you right to the base of the falls where you will be met with a stunning gorge of ice, water, and mist. The spray from the falls freezes the gorge walls surrounding the falls, and the river will probably be mostly frozen too.

The ice and waterfall combined are truly breathtaking! Be sure to stop at the falls overlook as well.
