Climb Rooster Rock at Rooster Rock State Park in the Columbia River Gorge for a short adventure and phenomenal views!

Head to Rooster Rock State Park off exit 25 on I-84 E in the Columbia River Gorge. Park at the west end of the park. There are multiple paths at the west end of the park heading south to I-84. If you go too far west, you will hit water. Pick one of these paths which lead to the edge of the freeway and follow the freeway west for 1/8 of a mile until you encounter a trail leading into the woods. Follow this short trail to the base of Rooster Rock.

There is a short third to fourth class step which lead to a bolt in the rock which serves as the belay point. From here, there is one pitch of very low fifth class climbing to the summit with adequate gear placements. At the summit, there are chains to rappel off of. Two 60 m ropes are needed to rappel.

Reviews

This is the only rock I've climbed in my life. When I was about 20, I ignorantly free climbed it because of the story my dad told me when I was a kid about he and his buddy climbing it. I always had it in the back of my mind that I would climb it. It seemed easy going up and I must have never looked down until I reached the summit because I don't recall any issues on the way up. Once I got to the summit and looked down I was completely freaked out. My knees were shaking so bad at that point that i thought a helicopter was going to need to come rescue me. Somehow I calmed myself down enough to make my way back down. I understand it's not a difficult climb if you're a rock climber but not real smart on my part. Now that I'm fifty and reflecting back 30 years, I think I might look into climbing it with some sort of climbing group so I can safely climb it and enjoy the view from the top this time!
