Description

This hike through Washington Park is a flexible 10 miles roundtrip (you can turn around when you've had your fill). The park will make you feel like you're escaping the city without ever leaving. If you're interested in mountain biking, there are trails available.

Take the train to Washington Park and hike through the arboretum. This will bypass a few miles of Wildwood Trail, but you won't miss much.

In the arboretum, the trail twists and turns through the trees, will smaller trails jutting off to the sides, through other groups of trees (each trail is aptly named for the type of respective tree). Continue on Wildwood and eventually you will cross Burnside Street, then climb gradually to Pittock Mansion, where there is a great view of the city, as well as toilets.

Past the mansion, you will start to descend – at the bottom, stray left off of Wildwood to take a shorter route to Cornell Road. Cross the street, where you will see a picnic area and parking lot. The trail descends again, and soon you will come to an old stone structure, where the trail splits – one heads out of the woods into a neighborhood, and the other continues into the park. You can either turn around here for a 10 mile hike roundtrip, or continue on for as long as you choose – Wildwood Trail runs 30 miles long, in total.

I did this hike in the snow yesterday, added a level of difficulty, but the snow covered trail is beautiful

One for the books! I ran this portion of the Wildwood Trail just as the first snow of the season began melting away. After reaching Pittock Mansion, I detoured to avoid all the fallen trees and ran down Burnside. I was surprised to see the road entirely closed to traffic due to more fallen trees!

You can find yourself in the quiet beauty of the forest just miles outside the city. I hike for hours on this trail and never get bored!

I recently hiked a partial amount of this trail on my last trip to Portland. Great for anyone and absolutely beautiful. Forest park is truly a wonderland. It was raining for some of our hike and the huge trees kept us fairly dry. Can't wait to explore more of this hike when I have more time !!

WOW! Okay, so first time hiker here and this was literally the most perfect trail to start on. I was really bummed for a long time thinking that the first time I go on a hike I'm going to have to do a short one and therefore a boring one. Wildwood Trail really delivers. My friend and I started from the road so we could just do the leg that takes you up to Pittock Mansion. This is a great trail for anyone that is new to hiking or wants to run most of the trail. It's smooth, very little branches or anything in your way, so it was really safe. It is a steep hike, but if we could do it I bet you can too! When you get to the top you get some of the most amazing views of Portland. We only had a couple hours left on hour trip and this hike was well worth it!
