So much of Connecticut’s beauty is contained in the little pockets of nature that you find scattered among the cities and suburbs. Blackledge Falls Park, approximately 80 acres of greenspace in Glastonbury, is one such gem.
Although the park contains hiking trails, a pond and a streambelt, the primary draw of this parcel of land is the 25 foot waterfall. The falls flow varies depending on the volume of precipitation, from a trickle in the dry months to a three-pronged vertical drop after some consistent snow melt or rain fall.
Blackledge Falls Park by itself is an easy, family-friendly hike or single track mountain bike ride, with only a mild elevation gain. The entire 80 acre parcel loop trail (blue and white trail, to the blue trail, which then re-intersects with the blue and white trail close to the parking lot) is approximately 1.5 miles, with some steep hills and water crossings. There are a few unmarked, intersection trails across the loop if you need to adjust the distance or avoid terrain. This versatile, but relatively short trail system is great for either getting the heart going, or spending some time relaxing in the woods, depending on your goals.
For those hikers and bikers looking for more distance, there are trails that connect Blackledge Falls park to the abutting 1500 acre Gay City State Park in Hebron, CT. From there you can access a trail system to reach the 640 acre Case Mountain park in Manchester, CT
Blackledge Falls Park is a pretty straightforward day hike. The greenspace is accessible in any season, but it is particularly nice in the fall when the leaves are turning. In the spring, you have the best chance of seeing a strong water flow at the falls, and in the winter, the overhanging icicle stalactite-like formations create a miniature ice cave behind the waterfall. If you’re looking for a nice way to spend your afternoon enjoying nature close to home, this park fits the bill.

This hike is really short and has minimal elevation gain. It is a quick jaunt to get out into nature in the area. The waterfall is nothing spectacular, but it is definitely pretty and worth checking out if you are nearby!

I decided to go for a hike here the weekend that it was below freezing for a couple of days. It's easy enough to find, and the trail was kept nice. It's a short hike to the falls, which I was excited to see since it was frozen over. Overall it's a pretty easy hike even in the winter, dress appropriately and you're fine. The waterfall is worth the trip, but I was back to my car in under an hour.

A bit short but the waterfall was a cool reward for a nice walk in the woods.
